It's been several years now that I dreamed of staging the masterpiece of Edmond Rostand. But we do not climb this room until we find his Cyrano.
I know Bernard Yerlès for at least 30 years, I had the chance to stage him in the role of Dom Juan ... It is natural that I thought of him so that he lends his flesh, his voice and his ... nose to the mythical character of Rostand. Bernard is a powerful actor, generous. At first reading, I already felt the emotion, the humor and the panache!
Constant Coquelin is 56 years old when he creates the role at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin in 1897.
The show is immediately a huge success. And yet, the author took a huge risk: in 1897, Ibsen already wrote Dollhouse and Strindberg, Miss Julie. The romantic dramas in verse are no longer recipe and Cyrano de Bergerac could pass for a dusty room. This was not the case and for more than 120 years, this text has delighted all generations.
The real Cyrano and the real Roxane that inspired the author were respectively 25 and 29 years at the siege of Arras that is discussed in the fourth act. At the next act, which takes place at the convent, fifteen years have passed. They are 40 and 44 years old.
So it's a play that takes place over two eras. There is the time of youth and of memory. Cyrano dying, visit a Roxane who has moved away from life. Cyrano died in 1655 and Madeleine Robineau, known as Roxane, followed him five years later.
So I imagined that the whole story happens in the memory of our two heroes. We begin with a few replicas of the fifth act to switch to the past, fifteen years earlier. And of course we return to the fifth act, as provided by the author.

Thierry DEBROUX.
