LES ATRIDES

from January 16 to February 15, 2020.

according to the texts of EURIPIDE, ESCHYLE, SENECA and SOPHOCLE.

In a few words…

We know the talent of director Georges Lini to make a masterpiece written long ago contemporary. After A Winter's Tale, A Tailor for Ladies and Macbeth, this time he will take us into the world of the Atrides, that cursed family that is tearing itself apart. It is one of the strongest works of the Greek playwright Aeschylus.

Respond to crime with other crimes. After ten years of siege, the fall of Troy, Agamemnon is welcomed as a hero in his palace. But he owes his victory to the gods who demanded the sacrifice of his daughter Iphigenia. His wife, Clytemnestre, awaits him, driven by revenge. With the help of her lover, Egisthe, she kills him on the very day of his return.
The crime is avenged by another crime. Ten years after his forfeit, Clytemnestre is killed in turn by his son Oreste, pushed to this new murder by his sister, Electre.

Murder of the husband for the price of the sacrifice of the daughter, murder of the mother by the children to restore the paternal honor: the Atrides, caught in the throes of revenge, shed blood from generation to generation, transforming the palace of Argos in a glowing and funeral altar.
The Orestie is "a great magnificent river, blood red from the curse of the Atrides", where justice and revenge merge, written in 458 BC, which still speaks to us today in the most intimate.
For this new collaboration, between the Théâtre du Parc and our Compagnie Belle de nuit, the fourth after Un Conte d'Hiver, Un tailleur pour dames et Macbeth, we therefore chose this great tragic family fresco, the Atrides , where each generation is torn apart and devoured and where each is in turn criminal, executioner and victim.
A text which, written 2500 years ago, has lost nothing, neither of its power, nor of its meaning. Ancient Greek (and Roman) theater is the father of our theater and if Euripides, Eschyle, Sophocles and Seneca are far from us, our culture is the daughter of theirs. Les Atrides is therefore a dive into the heart of our roots.
This project offers us the possibility of continuing the approach which has been ours for several seasons now: to make reason today texts of yesterday, to make new with what is not. To seek and (hopefully) to find the angle of attack which allows us to renew the experience and the perception of the spectator to avoid him thus a feeling of "already seen".
The Atrides; an ancient masterpiece therefore, made contemporary and universal.
